We are visiting in Texas

S/V Valentina
1/1 Happy New Year!

We are currently in Austin, Texas visiting with our oldest son Taylor, his wife, Kodi, and our two grand-daughters, Rylie and Shea.  What a way to start the new year.......playing with our grand-daughters.   Mom and dad (Taylor and Kodi) took some time off to play, so we got to enjoy the girls.

We.....rode our bicycle and scooter ..... Rylie is three years old.  Pulled the wagon....

We played with the barbecue bubble machine ........ Grandma trying to pop the bubbles.

We turned flips, over and over.....One more time, Grandpa....please.  We took bubble baths......Bubbles...bubbles, bubbles...

Shea is one year old.   We even took down the Christmas tree .....Taking the star off the top...

Then....we made pizza Grandma and Rylie rolling the dough...     Putting on the pepperoni's....     Ready for the oven....

 And , it was delicious!

We also had popcorn while we watched a movie.

A fun day.....with two good girls.

It really makes your heart leap for joy, when during Rylie's prayer,

she said she is thankful for the food, her family, and for the most wonderful day of all.

1/2 Today we all drove to the Enchanted Rock, a Texas State Park near Fredricksburg.  We all hiked up the mountain to the top.   A beautiful, warm day to be together and enjoy the outdoors.

Taylor, Kodi, Rylie, and Shea hiking up the hill. Shea decided to take a nap on the way. Climbing up.....it was a big hill.

1/5 After a great week in Austin, we headed towards Houston/Kemah and spent a few days with Ken and Pat of S/V Sun Dream.  They were our neighbors at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina and are leaving Kemah in a few weeks to go cruising for 6 months.   We are sure hoping they will make it down to the Panama area.  We would love to share an anchorage with them.

At different times in your life, your paths cross with friends you have so much in common with and enjoy each other's company so much.  Ken and Pat are those kind of friends.

Sonny, Kay, Pat, and Ken

1/7 We scooted over to Kemah and was amazed at how quick things are returning to normal after Hurricane Ike, just three months ago.

We went to the Boardwalk Marina to see many of our old friends.  Today, we saw:

  • Mark and Sharron, S/V Ocean's Lady - preparing their new boat to go to the Med in May
  • Steve and Colleen, S/V Anchor Management - preparing to leaving in 22 months
  • Glen and Mary, S/V Wind Dancer - planning on leaving in a year or two
  • Hugh Kelly, S/V Bear Necessities - planning on cruising the Florida coast and East Coast
  • Dave Greene, S/V High Spirits - preparing to leave in a few months for south Caribbean

We all went to eat at Outriggers and had fish tacos.  It was delicious!   Sonny and I spent the night aboard Glen's Wind Dancer.  It is good to be back on a boat again.

The Bertling Family We drove to Silsbee today to see Gerald and Judy and their family.

We watched the Oklahoma/Florida game together.

1/10 We came back to Waxahachie for the family baby shower for our new Bailee Rae Sisson.   She is growing and doing good.   We sure are enjoying our time with our family.

We met with some old friends from Lake Texoma, John and Lisa Hunt who own S/V Morning Star.  They plan to go cruising in the near future, so it was fun talking to them.  We remember, how it was, before we went cruising, having tons of questions and concerns, and just wishing we could talk to someone who had been there.
We are just catching up on doctor appointments, getting prescriptions refilled, renewing our passports, driver's licenses, and enjoying time with friends.

We love our home town of Waxahachie, TX and amazed at the growth the past few years.  Here are some pictures of the most photogenic courthouse in Texas.

The courthouse was completed in 1897 with the design of the Richardsonian Romanesque.  The sculptor came to Waxahachie, fell in love with a young maiden, sculpted her beautiful face in the pillars of the courthouse, which tells the story of their romance, until it turns sour.  The results are shown in the faces.

1/16 I had lunch today with some of the girls from Holcim.  What a fun reunion!   I had worked at Holcim in Midlothian for 17 years, so it was good to see them.  They are all still working way too hard.

Kay, Linda, Diana, Pam, Karen, and Mary

After three years away, I would probably get fired the first day if I had to go back to work now.   I think I would have to wear something called 'panty hose' again.   Can you wear them with flip-flops?.....and I would have to be there.....'every' day?   ; )

This evening, we had another fun meeting.   After a magazine article about our adventure, we began receiving emails and have been in contact with Robert Gallagher.   He is a high school teacher at Waxahachie and keeps up with our travels through our website.   He and his wife, Jane, are planning on going cruising in the future also.  So, we got to finally meet them in person and talk to them about some of our cruising experiences.

There are so many people really doing this...and, a lot are from Texas.

1/17 TV is addictive.   On the boat, of course, we do not have TV reception, so we have not watched TV in years.   Which is not all bad.  We do not feel that we have missed anything.   Well, OK....we do miss....... football games.

But, this morning, while we were laying in bed, we turned the TV on, and saw where the Fort Worth Stock Show Parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. and about an hour away.   So, we rounded up our three grand-children in Waxahachie, and headed to the parade in Fort Worth.

It is the biggest non-motorized parade, 1½ hours long, with only horses, mules, cows, dogs, or   longhorns pulling the carriages or prancing along.   We saw more horses than we have seen in our whole life.   It was fun!

Standing on the horses Beautiful horses And, lots of them.... Some pulled carriages
Kylie and Claire The Texas flag Hundreds of horses Lots of Christian Cowboys in Fort Worth

This evening, we went to Rodney and Vonnie's house.   Their family has a tradition that is special.  Their mother, Artie Johnston, always made maple doughnuts for her friends.  She passed away three years ago, so every year on her birthday, they get together with their families and friends, and make delicious maple doughnuts to celebrate her birthday.  I ate a total of two, and Sonny quit counting.
Happy Birthday to our oldest grand-daughter,
Kalei, who is 14. Kalei

1/18 This morning, we went to the Wifi at Whataburger  to check emails, then we headed north to Oklahoma.   We are at Gina, our daughter's home in Ada, to visit with them.

Tonight, we all went to Laser Zone.  It is a great place for kids....and adults.   We all played laser tag for the first time.   They have miniature golf and bowling, all with black lights.  It is a great, safe place for kids to hang out.

We have spent a lot of time playing Wii....

We headed even further north to visit our friends, Pat and Jim Kunard, in Tecumseh, OK.   Since they are both retired now, we talked them into returning with us to the boat in March and staying a while. Pat and Jim.....Sonny and Kay

They took us downtown OK City to see the memorial of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and then we went by to see Gene and Ceecee.

The wall to the entrance to the memorial The memorial is beautiful. The empty chairs in honor of the victims. This picture is worth a thousand words.

1/25 We went to church with Jim and Pat this morning where Pat's son, Mark, is the Pastor.  It was so good to finally meet him and hear him preach.  A very sincere, growing church.
1/26 An ice storm is blowing in, so we are heading south to Texas.

Barry and Judy Lower We stopped at Pottsboro and spent the night with our good friends, Barry and Judy Lower.  We have learned so much from them over the years about living and enjoying life each day.

1/27 It is time for us to get to babysit our newest grand-daughter, Bailee.  We are excited and thankful to be able to spend the time with her, and Gentry and Jennifer.  But, she is sure a sweetheart.  I  think her first word will be...."Grandma".     ; )
